MSM (methylsulfonylmethane)
MSM (methylsulfonylmethane) is the major form of sulfur in the human body. Sulfur is an important element for all cells and body tissues and an especially important nutrient for joint tissue, where it functions in the stabilization of the connective tissue matrix of cartilage, tendons, and ligaments. As far back as the 1930s, researchers demonstrated that individuals with arthritis are commonly deficient m this essential nutrient. Restoring sulfur levels brought about significant benefit to these patients. Many claims are being made regarding the use of a sulfur-containing supplement called methylsulfonylmethane (MSM) in the treatment of a wide variety of disorders. These claims are based on anecdotal evidence involving individual cases of arthritis (both osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis), lupus, muscle pain, and promotion of wound healing. To date, none of these claims have been substantiated in clinical research published in medical journals.
The typical dosage of MSM is 1,500 to 8,000 mg per day.
MSM is available in powder form, capsules, and tablets.
MSM Side Effects
MSM provides significant advantages over other forms of sulfur in that it is completely safe and at recommended levels (up to 8,000 mg daily) appears to be without side effects. Note: when people say they are allergic to sulfur, what they really mean is that they are allergic to the so-called sulfa drugs or sulfite-containing food additives. No allergies to MSM have been reported.
Pregnant/breast-feeding women - As the effects of MSM during pregnancy and lactation have not been sufficiently evaluated, it should not be used during these times.
Children - As the effects of MSM have not been sufficiently evaluated in children, it should be used only under direct medical supervision.
Seniors - No special precautions are known.
