Lysine
Lysine supplementation has become a popular treatment for herpes simplex virus HSV) infections including cold sores (HSV-1) and genital herpes (HSV-2). This popularity arose from research showing that lysine has antiviral activity in test tube studies. Lysine blocks arginine, another amino acid.In order for lysine to be effective, it appears that the dietary intake of arginine must be restricted, as double-blind studies on the effectiveness of lysine supplementation without avoiding arginine-rich foods have shown inconsistent results. When lysine has been given at a dosage of 1 g three times daily along with dietary restriction of nuts, chocolate, and gelatin, very good results have been seen. In one double-blind study, after six months of use lysine was rated as effective or very effective in 74 percent of subjects, compared to only 28 percent for those who received the placebo. The mean number of herpes outbreaks was 3.1 in the lysine group, compared to 4.2 in the placebo group.
Lysine supplements are available in capsules and tablets.
Lysine Side Effects
Do not take lysine if you have severe liver or kidney disease without consulting your doctor first. At recommended dosage levels no side effects have been reported even with chronic use.For maximum benefit, it is often recommended that a diet low in arginine and high in lysine be consumed. Foods high in arginine are chocolate, peanuts, seeds, and almonds and other nuts. Foods high in lysine include most vegetables, fish, turkey, and chicken. The recommended dosage is 1,000 mg (1 g) three times daily with meals.
Accidental over dosage of lysine may produce kidney damage. Do the following in case of accidental overdose: If the victim is unconscious or having convulsions, call for an ambulance immediately. If you take the victim to an emergency room, be sure to bring the bottle or container with you. If the victim is conscious, call your local poison control center or a health care professional. The poison control center may suggest inducing vomiting with ipecac syrup (available without a prescription at any pharmacy). Do not induce vomiting unless specifically instructed to do so.
As the effects of lysine supplementation during pregnancy and lactation have not been sufficiently evaluated, it should not be used during these times.
Suitable for children at one-half the adult dosage.
