Astragalus
Astragalus root (Astragalus membranaceus) is a traditional Chinese medicine used to treat viral infections including the common cold. Clinical studies in China have shown it to be effective when used as a preventive measure against the common cold. It has also been shown to reduce the duration and severity of symptoms in acute treatment of the common cold, as well as raise white blood cell counts in chronic leucopenia (a condition characterized by low white blood cell levels).
Research in animals indicates that astragalus works by stimulating several factors of the immune system. In particular, it appears to stimulate white blood cells to engulf and destroy invading organ-isms and cellular debris, and it also seems to enhance the production of interferon (a key natural compound produced by the body to fight viruses).Astragalus appears particularly useful in cases where the immune system has been damaged by chemicals or radiation (e.g., in patients undergoing chemotherapy and/or radiation treatment).
Astragalus root is available in bulk as the dried root, in tea bags, as a tincture, as a fluid extract, and as the dry powdered root or extract in capsules and tablets.
Astragalus Side Effects
Astragalus has no known side effects at recommended levels.
Astragalus can interfere with drugs that are purposely used to suppress the immune system, such as cyclophosphamide, which is used in patients who have had organ transplants to prevent the body from rejecting the transplanted organ.
Since astragalus can enhance immune function, it must not be used in people who have had organ transplants or who are taking drugs such as cyclophosphamide to purposely suppress the immune system.
Dried root (or as a decoction, or as a powder in capsules or tablets): 1-2 g three times daily Tincture (1:5): 2-4 ml three times daily.
Pregnant/breast-feeding women - As the effects of astragalus during pregnancy and lactation have not been sufficiently evaluated, it should not be used during these times.
Children - Suitable for children at one-half the adult dosage.
