Yohimbe
Yohimbe bark is a source of the alkaloid yohimbine, a drug approved by the FDA for erectile dysfunction (impotence). When used alone, yohimbine is successful in 34 to 43 percent of cases of erectile dysfunction. Unfortunately, a 1995 analysis showed that while crude yohimbe bark typically contains 6 percent total alkaloids, most commercial products contained virtually no yohimbine of the twenty-six samples, nine were found to contain absolutely zero yohimbine, seven contained only trace amounts, and the rest contained small amounts. These results and the problems with side effects call into question the use of over-the-counter yohimbe preparations and suggest that men wanting to use yohimbine should discuss it with their doctor and get the prescription form.Yohimbe bark is available in crude (bulk) form, fluid extracts, and solid extracts. Since the optimum dosage of yohimbe depends on the content of yohimbine, preparations standardized for yohimbine may produce more dependable results. These preparations are usually available in tablets or capsules. Brand names available include Male Fuel.
